The Kansas City Chiefs are a league worst 1-9 this season with Peyton Manning looming on the horizon this Sunday; and at the helm of this disaster is General Manager Scott Pioli. When Scott arrived in 2009, he handpicked Matt Cassel to be the franchise Quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs. Since that time Scott has the worst record for a General Manager in Chiefs history at 22-37. Scott’s record against teams with a winning record is a measly 3-16. The Chiefs have lost by 14 points or more 20 times in 59 games during Scott’s tenure. Lastly, when the Chiefs give up more than 24 points in a game they are an unbelievable 0-25 in those games.

Let’s take a trip back to the 2012 offseason where Scott Pioli tried to call Peyton Manning and Jeff Fisher to come visit Kansas City; only to have them both reject his phone call like he was Screech Powers and they were Lisa Turtle. He also said we couldn’t sign CB Brandon Carr because he was asking for too much money and it didn’t make sense to have two starting corners making $10 million a year. Instead, he opted to sign CB Stanford Routt who was recently cut last week for lack of production in relation to the salary they were paying him. He also said we need to sign WR Dwayne Bowe so it would be difficult to put a ton of money into both players knowing we have other holes to fill after this season and in the future. Unfortunately, he has messed that up as well by not getting Dwayne Bowe signed before the season and leaving us to guess whether Bowe will want to come back next year or test the free agent market. I could go on and on about how horrible Scott Pioli is as a General Manager, but I’d rather focus on the positive which is finding an accomplished replacement.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing former Denver Broncos General Manager Ted Sundquist on my podcast (www.theoutsiderspodcast.weebly.com) and I came away ready to start the Ted Sundquist for Kansas City Chiefs General Manager in 2013 campaign! During his tenure with the Broncos, Ted helped them land players such as John Lynch, Daniel Graham, Al Wilson, John Mobley, Brandon Marshall, Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis, Trevor Pryce, and Deltha O’Neal. He engineered the trade which sent Clinton Portis to the Washington Redskins in exchange for Champ Bailey. He also made the draft day move to trade with the Rams and select Jay Cutler with the 11^th overall pick after Vince Young and Matt Leinart had come off the board. As a result, Sundquist’s tenure was the start of a franchise record five consecutive winning seasons for the Denver Broncos.

In my interview with Ted he spoke of how he wanted the Kansas City Chiefs General Manager job in 2009 and interviewed for it, but it wound up going to Scott Pioli. Ted also said he wouldn’t have brought Matt Cassel here to Kansas City as they didn’t even have him on their draft board when he was coming out of college. He said that although Matt had a nice season going 11-5 in 2008, for the New England Patriots, after Tom Brady had gotten hurt; that team was loaded with talent coming off a Super Bowl loss, which if they had won, would have given them an undefeated season. He also talked about how he would have re-signed Brandon Carr because he understands how talented that group could have been with him and Brandon Flowers. I asked him if he’d be interested in being the Kansas City Chiefs General Manager if the position were open in 2013 and he said he would definitely be interested. I believe Ted Sundquist is the man for the job in 2013 and I hope the rest of you will get on board with this campaign; Ted Sundquist for Kansas City Chiefs General Manager in 2013!
